Why I Chose To Teach...

Thursday, September 5, 2013

Hi Loves! Today's post is not fashion related as it usually is, but about something near and dear to my heart. And that is why I chose to become a teacher. From the time I was a child growing up, until high school, I knew I wanted to be doctor. I would tell anyone that asked me. My family and friends knew and would tell others as well. Some of the most influential people to help encourage me to become a doctor were my high school chemistry and physics teachers. They sparked a love of learning and science and discovery inside of me. I had several amazing teachers in elementary and middle school, but I really developed close bonds with several of my high school teachers. They were encouraging, supportive, and showed a genuine interest in whether I was successful academically and personally.

After I moved away for college to attend the University of Kentucky, I stayed on the pre-med track as a Biology major and I studied hard and of course had an amazing time! ;) Around my third year of college, I started to feel unhappy with my major but I stuck it out and graduated. I took a year off of after graduating to figure out whether I wanted to apply to medical school or not. So I began substitute teaching and within months, I knew I had found my calling. I was meant to become a teacher. I have to be honest and tell you I never saw myself as a teacher or thought I had the patience. But I quickly became addicted to that “light bulb moment” that pops up in a student’s eyes when they learn something new that they will never forget. And knowing I had helped them learn something new was one of the best feelings of fulfillment I'd ever experienced. I am currently almost finished with my Masters in Elementary Education and I plan to teachscience and help inspire our future teachers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, and scientists!

That's why when I found out about this amazing documentary called TEACH I knew I had to share it with all of you.

"TEACH, Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim’s third documentary film about education in Americaasks the question: What Does It Take to Be A Great Teacher Today?

Following four dedicated teachers from different schools across the country over the course of one school year, TEACH gives viewers a window into the challenges, demands and rewards of teaching, with the purpose of elevating and promoting the profession, as well as engaging new teachers and supporting current teachers.  We see that for the best teachers, it’s not just a job but a mission.

As intense as it is emotional, this year in the life of four public-school teachers illustrates how tenacity, passion and a belief in innovation drive these educators as they navigate the daily ups and downs of the 2012-2013 school year. These educators use conventional and unconventional methods and do whatever it takes to overcome obstacles and strive for success."

Watch the incredibly inspiring documentary TEACH on 9/6 on CBS at 8PM ET/PT and 9/14 on Pivot at 8PM ET/PT!

Okay loves, if you are a teacher, why did you become one? If you are not a teacher, please share an experience you had with your favorite teacher!

*This post is sponsored by Participant Media but my love of teaching and teachers is 100% my own.
